Nevada County Scotch Broom Challenge Is On

The Scotch Broom Challenge was created in 2007 to address the spread of this highly flammable and invasive plant in our community. The Scotch Broom Challenge started with just a few sites in Nevada County. In the spring of 2012 over 250 volunteers took the Scotch Broom Challenge and pulled broom at 21 sites throughout Nevada County and Placer County.

Local groups and agencies are once again teaming up and taking the Scotch Broom Challenge. We hope to educate and get people motivated in the region to combat this highly flammable invasive weed. Scotch Broom Challenge pulls are generally from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. No experience is needed. Equipment and supplies are provided. All ages and abilities welcome. Banner Lava Cap/Gracie Rd, Nevada City

Banner Mountain HOA

The areas to be cleared are the roadsides along Banner Lava Cap Road from Pittsburgh Mine Road to Gracie Road; and Gracie Road from Banner Lava Cap Road to lower portion of Gracie. The Banner Mountain Homeowners Association has been working to remove the broom along these roads for four years. Both roads are fire evacuation routes for Banner Mountain. Broom growing along these roadsides can obstruct drivers’ view of side roads, increase the potential of a fire being started from a cigarette being tossed from a passing car, and more importantly, prevent the use of these roads as an evacuation routes in the event of a major fire. This project site is sponsored by the Banner Mountain Homeowners Association. The site coordinator is Chuck Staetz. Get a 2013 Firewise Calendar for Completing a FREE Defensible Space Advisory Visit

The 2013 Firewise Calendar features native plants.

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County in cooperation with the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and National Firewise Communities are offering residents in Nevada County free defensible space advisory visits to educate citizens about Defensible Space.

California Public Resources Code 4291 requires every landowner to “maintain around and adjacent to the building or structure a firebreak made by removing and clearing away, for a distance of not less than 100’ on each side of the building or structure or to the property line, whichever is nearer, all flammable vegetation or other combustible growth”.

In addition, this code allows insurance companies to require landowners to maintain the firebreaks.

We live in a wildland urban interface area which has the potential for catastrophic wildfire.

Receive custom advice about:

  • Building materials.
  • Fire facts.
  • How to manage the vegetation on your property.
  • Plant species considered “high fire risk.”
  • Proper clearance from structures.
  • Proper signage for your property.
  • Answers to any questions you might have about the defensible space around your structures.
  • And a variety of other helpful information.

In addition, you will be provided with referrals for contractors and other resources that could help you complete your fuel reduction project.

Advisors will inform citizens about:

  • The burn permit process.
  • The California Forest Improvement Program (CFIP).
  • The FSCNC Chipping Program.
  • The FSCNC Special Needs Assistance Program.

Museums in Auburn : Barnhart Museum, and Gold Country Museum – Mining

Arriving in Auburn on a hot Sunday in July, John and I decided to tour a couple of museums. First was the historic Bernhard Museum just off Auburn Folsom Boulevard near the fairgrounds. The house is over 150 years old, built in 1851 by George Bishop and John Long as the Traveler’s Rest Hotel, one of Auburn’s oldest surviving buildings.

In the Gold Rush, this hotel held teamsters traveling the old Auburn Folsom Road, and miners working in nearby Rich Flat. In 1858 the building was converted to a home for one of the builders, George Bishop. The house and 30 acres were sold in 1864 to Eliza Caruthers, and again in 1868 to the Bernhard family. This family and their descendants lived here for over 100 years. They started planting vineyards, making wine and then built a two story natural rock winery into a hillside in 1874.

Now with only 2+ acres left, the house has become a beautifully restored museum of the Victorian Era (mid 1830’s to 1900). No pictures are allowed inside the museum, but it is truly a sight to see. Also on the grounds is an old wine processing building, displaying wine making and barrel making artifacts, as well as a barn with a hearse, a sleigh, buggies and wagons of days gone by.

The top of the stone winery is now an art gallery, while the bottom still houses and operating winery, Bonitata (more on this later).

Next we visited the Gold Country Museum, housed in a historic Works Progress Administration (WPA) building, on the Auburn fairgrounds itself.  We began by touring a replicated hard rock mine (thanking our lucky stars that we didn’t have to do that job!) Many other mining displays are also on display, as well as a model stamp mill, and an assayer’s office, a miner’s cabin and an old saloon.

After this tour we went back to the Barnhart Museum Parking lot, but walked down to the winery to do a little wine tasting in the Bonitata Boutique Winery (see last picture in the slides).

Fourth of July Parade in Dutch Flat, CA

Judy and I went to Dutch Flat in Placer County this Fourth of July to watch their annual parade. The town is small, population about 160, although on the 4th I’m sure the population was well over 800  people. Their one hotel was closed and I asked if there were any restaurants in town and the answer was no.    Since we had decided to wait and eat when we got to Dutch Flat, that was disappointing.  However, the weather was perfect, not too hot for a Fourth of July day.

We picked a great spot to watch, since there was a group of children there with water hoses, water guns and anything else that could squirt water. They met their match several times, since there was quite a few fire trucks with hoses that turned the tide on the kids.

Since the parade wasn’t that long, they want around twice to make up for it. Yep, around the town a couple of times.

Residents of Cascade Shores east of Nevada City will be getting a larger, more reliable public water system, under actions taken Wednesday (May 23) by the Nevada Irrigation District Board of Directors.

The board voted to purchase 4400 feet of new eight-inch pipeline to replace deteriorating and undersized 4-inch and 6-inch main lines installed in the 1960s and 1970s by the developer of Cascade Shores. The new pipe will be purchased from low bidder Groeniger & Co. for $129,800.

The system improvement is planned along Cascade Loop, Cascade Drive and Artic Close and also includes nine new fire hydrants. NID maintenance crews are slated to begin installing the new pipeline in June.

The overall project is budgeted at $350,000 and is part of a systematic program to upgrade aging water infrastructure in four Nevada County residential communities developed in the 1960s and 1970s. An initial project was completed in Alta Sierra last year, an upgrade is now being completed in Lake of the Pines and an improvement at Lake Wildwood is planned for 2013.

Directors also awarded a $732,600 contract to T&S Construction, Inc. of Sacramento for construction of a new transmission main line along Highway 49 in North Auburn.

The water project will provide for more water and fire flow along the Highway 49 corridor from Locksley Lane to Quartz Drive. Work is expected to begin in June and be completed before winter.

This site is located immediately adjacent to Twin Cities Church off the Rough & Ready Highway just outside Grass Valley. Volunteers are meeting on the corner of Adam Ave and Rough & Ready Hwy. Bear Yuba Land Trust

Woodpecker Wildlife Preserve is located on Banner Mountain just off Gracie Road. It is a 28 acre preserve owned by the Bear Yuba Land Trust. There are public trails on the preserve that are actively used by the community. This preserve overlooks Nevada City and is a wonderful resource for bird watchers, mountain bikers and hiking enthusiasts. The project site coordinator Allison Dawson. Join the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation for its annual barbecue and a night at the rodeo on Thursday, August 11 at 5:30 pm at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

This fun, popular event is a great family event held during the Nevada County Fair! A delicious barbecue dinner will be served on the VIP Patio at the Fairgrounds. Following dinner, the fun continues at the Fairgrounds Arena for the rodeo.

Nevada County Airfest 2011

I was there for the dinner dance. The theme is the 40’s 50’s with a lot of the attendees dressing  for the era.   Lots of fun and I have to thank Brian and Rachel O’Brien for tickets to the dinner – dance. This was a great Airfest!
