Draft Horse Classic Enter Your Exhibits in the Harvest Fair

It’s free and all exhibitors will receive free tickets to a Draft Horse Classic performance 

Entry forms are now being accepted for exhibit entries in the Harvest Fair, which takes place during the Draft Horse Classic, September 24 – 27, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The deadline to turn in entry forms to enter exhibits is 4 pm on Friday, September 18. It’s free to enter, and all exhibitors will receive complimentary tickets to the Friday evening performance of the Draft Horse Classic.

Entry forms are now being accepted at the Fair Office and on-line at www.NevadaCountyFair.com.  There are more than 100 different categories to choose from, including fruits and vegetables, cobblers, harvest pies, scarecrows, jams, honey, cut flowers, produce characters, and birdhouses. There’s even a “Garden Photo Contest” to share the beauty of your own garden and plants; and an Adult Artistic Corner for those interested in showing off arts and crafts. So many fun categories to choose!

There’s a division for youth and teens, which includes categories like apple face dolls, decoupage, Halloween masks, painted pumpkins, wreaths, table settings, and ceramics. Plus, there’s a Special People’s division for those interested in showing off their talents at the Harvest Fair.

Exhibitors must either submit paper entry forms at the Fair office or enter online at www.NevadaCountyFair.com between now and Friday, September 18 at 4 pm.  It’s free and it’s simple!

The Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair runs September 24 – 27 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. There are six performances featuring the beautiful Draft Horses – Thursday and Friday at 6:30 pm, Saturday at 10 am and 6:30 pm, and Sunday at 10 am and 4 pm.

In addition to the Draft Horse performances, the Harvest Fair is happening at the Fairgrounds throughout the event. Musical entertainment, Art at the Classic, food on Treat Street, a clogging jamboree, Harvest Fair exhibits, and visits to the barns make for a fun family day at the Harvest Fair.

Junior Livestock Auction, Ag Mechanics Auction, Treat Street Benefit Nevada County 

Beautiful weather (well, one really hot day), more than $500,000 raised for Nevada County youth, highly-attended arena events, and several community partnerships made for a successful 2015 Nevada County Fair.

  • More than 91,000 people attended this year’s Fair.
  • More than $825,000 was generated on Treat Street by local non-profit organizations. Proceeds raised will allow local non-profit organizations to provide vital services to our community.
  • The Ag Mechanics Auction, featuring 50 custom items handmade by Bear River and Nevada Union FFA students, raised approximately $53,000 for these students.
  • Two hundred and thirty five animals were sold at the Junior Livestock Auction, grossing more than $463,000 for the youth of Nevada County.  This year, there were 584 bumps on 235 animals, which is an average of 2.5 bumps per student. A bump occurs when a buyer offers additional money to the price of the animal, as a benefit to the student.  That’s a supportive community!
  • More than 3,600 students and educators attended Wednesday’s Scholar Student Day.
  • Almost 11,000 attended the Fair’s five arena events – the Flying U Extreme Rodeo, Monster Trucks, Tuff Truck racing, and the Rotary Club-sponsored Destruction Derby.  The arena events sold out on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night!
  • Sunday’s special promotion of “Five Until Five,” brought 5,600 visitors to the Fair, and coupled with paid attendance after five, saw more than 15,000 visitors on that day.
  • In the Special Events Tent on Saturday, 11 people – including mother/daughter team, Holly and Lydia Panter – donated hair to Locks of Love
  • This year’s Fair included more than 7,040 exhibits from our community, including 500 photos in our Instagram Contest and almost 30 entries in the new Recycled Fan Art category.
  • One week prior to opening day, the Fair partnered with BloodSource, The Food Bank of Nevada County, Foothill Lions Club, Story Club, NEO, Nevada County 2-1-1, and Sierra Harvest, to offer Community Involvement Day – a day to donate items to these non-profit organizations, while also receiving free tickets to the Fair. As a result of this day, 107 blood donors were registered and 88 pints of life saving blood were collected; more than 700 books were collected (and 100 were given away); garden tools and supplies were collected; 1,800 pounds of food (enough to feed 45 families of 4 for one week) were donated; enough school supplies were received to provide for 20 families; more than $600 worth of crafts were donated to NEO; and 343 prescription eye glasses and seven hearing aids were donated.
  • More than 225 vendors and concessionaires participated in this year’s Fair.

The Fair teamed up with local libraries on their summer reading program and provided carnival ride tickets as prizes to children who read during the summer. During Fair time, more than

Exciting Contests and Activates at the Nevada County Fair

No pre-registration required. Show up ½ hour before event, have fun, and win great prizes! 

At this year’s Nevada County Fair, August 12 – 16, there are exciting contests and activities happening each day of the Fair! Here are just a few of the fun contests planned for this year’s Fair.

New this year is the LIVE Art Battle on Saturday from 2:30 – 3:30 pm. Artists of all ages will have 20 minutes to create a painting, and then the audience will vote for their favorite. All supplies provided.

With the “Catch the Fair Bug!” theme, we have lots of fun “bug” contests – Building A Bug Snack, where Fair-goers can create an edible bug out of yummy food on Wednesday at noon; Make and Take Bug Crafts on Wednesday at 2 pm; Create a Litter Bug from recycled items on Thursday at 3 pm; and Make a Bug Puppet on Friday at 2 pm.

If you love creating with Duct Tape, don’t miss the Duct Tape Art Challenge.  Kids and adults will have 30 minutes to create an item or thing. Some tape will be available for use; however, if your project requires specific colors/patterns or supplies, please provide. Happening on Friday; kids contest at 3 pm; adults 3:45 pm.

How about a scavenger hunt using your cell phone? Find a partner and join the fun at the Cell Phone Photo Scavenger Hunt on Wednesday at 3 pm.  At check- in, contestant teams will receive a scavenger hunt list, and teams will have 45 minutes to find and photograph with their cell phone as many of the items on the list that they can.

Nevada County Fair Planned for August 12 – 16, 2015

Fairgrounds confirms that Fair will take place as planned

The Nevada County Fairgrounds confirmed today that the Nevada County Fair will continue as planned on August 12 – 16.

While the Fairgrounds are currently being used for a command post and fire camp, the Fair team is busy behind the scenes preparing for its biggest event of the year – the Nevada County Fair.

“There have been rumors of the Fair’s cancellation, but that was never part of our plan,” said Rea Callender, CEO of the Fairgrounds. “While we are happy to be able to assist our community and provide a place of rest for our heroic firefighters, we are still busy preparing for this year’s Fair, which opens in less than two weeks.”

To date, the Fair has received more than 7,000 entries for community exhibits, discounted tickets are being sold, and entries for special contests are being accepted.

Additionally, the Fair confirmed that Community Involvement Day – a day to donate items to non-profit organizations, while also receiving free tickets to the Fair – will take place in the Gate 1 parking lot on Monday, August 3. This year, the Nevada County Fairgrounds is teaming up with the Food Bank of Nevada County, Foothill Lions, Story Club, Nevada County 2-1-1, Sierra Harvest, NEO, and BloodSource for Community Involvement Day.  These organizations will be set-up at the Fairgrounds Gate 1 parking lot on Monday, August 3, from 1 – 6 pm, to receive donations of items.

“The fire camp will still be on the grounds during Community Involvement Day, but we’re ready to host the event, which will cause little disruption to the fire camp,” said Callender.

While the Fair will take place as planned in two weeks, the grounds are currently closed to pedestrians and bicyclists; and RV camping is limited.  The Fairgrounds will notify the community when these services are open again to the public.

The Main Office will continue to sell advanced sale Fair tickets, and continues to be open during normal business hours of Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

“On August 12, we will be ready to open our gates to the community and welcome them to the 2015 Nevada County Fair,” said Callender. “At that time, we’ll also take the time to celebrate our community and thank our firefighters for their efforts in keeping us all safe.”

Seeking Community Showcase Acts for the Nevada County Fair

Applications available for those interested in performing or demonstrating at this year’s Fair 

The Nevada County Fair is now accepting applications for local entertainers and community acts to perform at the 2015 Nevada County Fair, August 12 – 16. Do you have a dance group you’d like to see perform at the Fair? Does your group have a skill they’d like to demonstrate to Fair-goers? Want to do a martial arts demonstration or a cheerleading demonstration or show off your baton twirling skills? If so, the Fairgrounds wants your application. This is a great way to share your talents with the community!

Applications are now available on the website at www.NevadaCountyFair.com.  To be considered, the application must be returned to the Fairgrounds by June 5. There is no paid compensation for community showcases and demonstrations.

The application is for those interested in performing on the Dance Pad (available afternoon and evening hours); The Green (available during afternoon hours); or the Tumbleweed Stage (available evening hours only).

Five days of fun in Grass Valley

It’s Fair season, and the Nevada County Fair, happening August 12 – 16, has five days of “Simply Fun” planned for Fair-goers of all ages. Held under the shade of the tall pine trees in Grass Valley, the Nevada County Fair is the perfect opportunity to listen to musical entertainment, eat delicious food, enjoy carnival rides and games, visit barns full of animals, and see thousands of community exhibits – all in a community-friendly environment.

While visiting the Fair, zip line across The Green, check out the sky diver flying into the arena during the rodeo, try your hand at gold panning, walk in a water balloon, see baby chicks hatch in the embryology display, watch the Fair’s Family Feud competition, or listen to Mogollon’s music as they celebrate 20 years of performing at the Nevada County Fair. Or, how about visiting Circus Imagination, where children become instant stars by being selected from the audience, put in costume, and then performing in a spontaneous circus for the crowd.

Long-time crowd pleasing events will soar into the Fair’s arena Wednesday through Sunday evening. There’s the Flying U Extreme Rodeo happening on Wednesday and Thursday evening; while Friday and Saturday night features Tuff Trucks and Monster Trucks. On Sunday, the ever-popular Destruction Derby returns to the arena. All arena events begin at 7 pm.

Enjoy ongoing, musical entertainment at one of the outdoor stages. This year features a variety of music – pop rock, country rock, traditional country, Chicago-style blues, jazz, traditional and contemporary bluegrass, rockabilly dance, and rock and roll. Barbershop quartets, hula dancing and dancers, and Nevada County’s Concert Band will also be featured on the various stages.

For more fun, enter one of the special contests held daily in the Special Events tent. There’s a Cell Phone Photo Scavenger Hunt, an Instagram contest, Field Games, Kids Duct Tape Art Challenge, a Yo-Yo Contest, a Scrapbook Page Layout Contest, “Minute to Win It” fun, a Diaper Derby, a Just Dance Contest, and nightly karaoke. No pre-registration required – just show up and have fun. Details for contests are available on the Fair’s website.

A visit to the Fair wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Treat Street. It is here that you’ll find an array of delicious foods and drinks – pasties, tacos, corn on the cob, beer, tempura zucchini, baked potatoes, nachos, hamburgers, corn dogs, caramel corn, and more – all while supporting local, non-profit organizations.

Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation to Host Cioppino Feed

Join the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation at its fourth annual All-You-Can-Eat Cioppino Feed on Saturday, March 7 at Ponderosa Hall at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 5 pm, and dinner service begins at 6 pm.

For the event, the chefs will create and serve Arnie Romanello’s special 100-year-old recipe for all to enjoy. Dinner includes antipasto, all-you-can-eat Cioppino, salad and garlic bread.  This year, a pasta dish will be available to those who do not prefer Cioppino, but want to attend the event. A no-host bar will also be available, and there will be a silent dessert auction and a live auction.

Tickets are $40 per person. If you’d like to purchase a table for 8, it is $350 and includes two bottles of wine.

Gingerbread House Competition Results and Canned Food Drive Results

A successful canned food drive, more than 120 vendors, and 45 gingerbread houses built made the 30th Annual Country Christmas Faire at the Nevada County Fairgrounds a success.

The 12th Annual Gingerbread House Competition was once again a crowd favorite, with 45 entries received. Of those entries, the Best of Show award went to the Files Family of Chicago Park, and the People’s Choice Award went to Kathy Kinney of Penn Valley. The Best of Show is chosen by the judges, and the People’s Choice is selected through ballots cast by individuals who attend the Christmas Faire.

First place winners in the traditional categories include Caylee Sinnock and Preston Lancaster (age 5 & under); Hunter Casteel and Finn Becker (age 6-8); Owen Strolle, McBride Family, Nate Becker, Kimberly Pfadt, and Evelyn Grandfield (age 9-12); Alyssa Porter, Jillian Beaver, J&C Anderson, and Willow West (Kits: Age 8 and under); Molly Becker (age 13-17); Sherry Andreini (age 18 -64); Joan Morton (age 65 & over); Nancy Pease (special needs); Scotten Out of School 3rd Grade, Scotten Out of School 2nd Grade, Scotten Out of School K/1st Grade, and Scotten Out of School 4th Grade Girls (group – children); Ali McDaniel and Pfadt Family (family); and the Files Family (Adult/Group – ages 18 and over).

The first place winner in the non-traditional categories is Joanne Perilman & Crew (adult/group – ages 18 and over).

At Sunday’s canned food drive, Grass Valley Elks Lodge #538, with help from Boy Scout Troop 21, collected more than 200 pounds of food. These donations will help complete Christmas food baskets for 28 local families during the holiday season.

The names of all the Gingerbread House Competition winners can be found on the Fairgrounds’ website at www.NevadaCountyFair.com. The 2015 Country Christmas Faire is planned for Thanksgiving weekend, November 27, 28, and 29.

Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley Elks Team up for a Canned Food Drive

Donate a can of food on Sunday, November 30, and receive $1 off admission

The Nevada County Fairgrounds and Grass Valley Elks are teaming up for a canned food drive to help feed those in need in Nevada County.

Bring a can of food (or two or three) to the Country Christmas Faire on Sunday, November 30, and the Fairgrounds will give you a coupon for $1 off general admission to the Christmas Faire on that day (one coupon per person). Volunteers from Grass Valley Elks will collect the cans at the food collection bins at the Fairgrounds from 10 am – 4 pm at Gates 1, 3 and 5, which is also where you’ll receive your coupon.  All food donated will help feed those in need in Nevada County.

The Country Christmas Faire is happening Thanksgiving weekend, November 28, 29 and 30 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Hours are 10 am – 5 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10 am – 4 pm on Sunday. Cost is $4, and free to children under 12.  Parking is free.

Nevada County Fairgrounds’ CEO to be Inducted into Western Fairs Association’s Hall of Fame

Western Fairs Association (WFA) announced this week that they will induct Sandy Woods, Chief Executive Officer of the Nevada County Fairgrounds, into the Western Fairs Association’s Hall of Fame at its upcoming convention in Reno.

The WFA Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made substantial contributions to the Fair industry through leadership, education, legislation and outstanding service.

Woods is being recognized for her contributions to the Fair industry, including her work at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. She has worked at the Nevada County Fairgrounds since 1995, where she started as Deputy Manager, and has served as the CEO since 2009. Additionally, Woods has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Western Fairs Association since 2005, and served as the WFA Board President in 2012. She is currently Chair of the California Fairs Alliance, which provides advocacy and resource development for the network of California fairs.

“Sandy’s service as an Officer, and as the President of the Western Fairs, set a new bar for leadership,” noted WFA Executive Director Stephen Chamber. “Her continuing role as the Chair of the California Fairs Alliance has helped California’s 78 fairs move through the difficult challenges driven by the Great Recession. Celebrating her service will be the highlight of our January Convention.”

Prior to her work at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, Woods worked as the Controller/CFO for MasterCard for the western United States. She also has an extensive background and career in international agriculture.  Upon moving to Nevada County, she became the general manager of the Nevada City Winery and remains a director at the Winery. She is also a past director of the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation, as well as a member of the Foothill Lions Club.

“The Hall of Fame Board of Governors did an outstanding job,” said WFA President Pat Kress. “Sandy defines commitment and service to the fair community. She has worked tirelessly on behalf of the California fair network. She is a great addition to the WFA Hall of Fame.”

The Western Fairs Association is a non-profit trade association serving the Fair industry throughout the Western United States and Canada. WFA serves fair-related businesses, fair management, fair board directors, festivals, and industry associations.

Woods’ induction will take place in January at WFA’s industry awards celebration in Reno.
