Nevada County Fairgrounds Hosts Job Fair For 2013 Fair Season

The Nevada County Fairgrounds will host a job fair to fulfill its hiring needs for this year’s Fair season. The Nevada County Fair job fair will be held on Thursday, May 16, from 2 – 6 pm in the Main Street Center at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

If you are interested in working at the Fairgrounds during the 2013 Fair season, plan to attend this event. Fair staff will be accepting applications from 2 – 6 pm for all departments, as well as conducting interviews on site. Some of the jobs available include gate cashiers, ticket monitors, “red shirt” patrols, exhibit crew, exhibit entry clerk, clean-up crew, and parking crew.

Employment applications, as well as available jobs and job descriptions are posted on the Fair’s website at www.NevadaCountyFair.com. Applications will also be available on the day of the job fair.

Gingerbread House Competition Results and Canned Food Drive Results

A successful canned food drive, more than 100 vendors, and 55 gingerbread houses built made the 28^th Annual Country Christmas Faire at the Nevada County Fairgrounds a success.

The 10^th Annual Gingerbread House Competition was once again a crowd favorite, with 55 entries received. Of those entries, the Best of Show winner was Wanda Dunn of Penn Valley, and the People’s Choice Award went to Kathy Kinney of Penn Valley. The Best of Show is chosen by the judges, and the People’s Choice is selected through ballots cast by individuals who attend the Craft Faire.

First place winners in the traditional categories include MaKenna Chapman, Preston Lancaster, and Finn Becker (child 5 & under); Owen Strolle, and Delaney Aday (child – ages 6-8); Aiden Keller (child – ages 9-12); Joe Ceselini (kits – ages 8 & under); Ariana Hoffman (teen – ages 13-17); Sherry Andreini (adult – 18 -64); Mary Abbott (adult – 65 & over); GVSD ASP Scotten Kindergarten, and Baylie and Brina Stratton (group – children).

First place winners in the non-traditional categories include Corbin Beals (child 5 & under); Keegan Thompson (child – ages 9 – 12); Toria Kinney (teen – ages 13-17); Wanda Dunn (adult – ages 18 – 64); GVSD ASP Scotten 3^rd and 4^th grade (group – children); The Jimenez Family (group – family); and Joanne Perilman and Company (group – adult 18 & over).

With the help of HOPE (Help Other People Eat) in Nevada County, Sunday’s canned food drive collected more than 480 pounds of non-perishable canned food, which is enough to feed 20 families for a month. These donations will be used at the organization’s December 15 food distribution. HOPE in Nevada County is a program established through the Grass Valley Elks, who partner with the Food Bank of Nevada County to feed those in need. HOPE distributes food on the third Saturday of every month to anyone in the county in need of food and emergency food. Additionally, the Wellmon family, who operate the Grinders food booth at the Country Christmas Faire, received $175 in tips at the event, and will match that amount and donate $350 to the local Food Bank.

Nevada County Fairgrounds Team up With HOPE in Nevada County For Christmas Fair

Donate a can of food on Sunday, November 25, and receive $1 off admission

The Nevada County Fairgrounds and HOPE (Helping Other People Eat) in Nevada County are teaming up to help feed those in need in Nevada County.

Bring a can of food (or two or three) to the Country Christmas Faire on Sunday, November 25, and the Fairgrounds will give you a coupon for $1 off general admission to the Christmas Faire on that day (one coupon per person). Volunteers from HOPE will collect the cans at the food collection bins at the Fairgrounds from 10 am – 4 pm at Gates 1, 3 and 5, which is also where you’ll receive your coupon.

With the help of HOPE, all food collected at the Fairgrounds on Sunday will be used to help feed those in need in Nevada County. HOPE in Nevada County is a program established through the Grass Valley Elks. Through this program, the Grass Valley Elks partner with the Food Bank of Nevada County to feed those in need, as well as working with the organization on a school snack program. HOPE distributes food once a month on the third Saturday of each month to anyone in the county in need of food and emergency food.

The Country Christmas Faire is happening Thanksgiving weekend, November 23 – 25, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Hours are 10 am – 5 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10 am – 4 pm on Sunday. Cost is $4, and free to children under 12. Parking is $5; however, Faire-goers will receive one free admission for each paid parking pass.

Nevada County Gingerbread House Competition Now On

Now is the time for holiday bakers to think about the creation of a magical Gingerbread House to enter into the 10^th annual Gingerbread House Competition at the Country Christmas Faire, held November 23 – 25 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Houses, bungalows, cottages, and castles fashioned from spicy gingerbread will be displayed for holiday shoppers to enjoy at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley during the Thanksgiving weekend festivities.

Competitors may enter any of the many categories, including children, teens, adults, special needs, families, and groups. There’s even a category for children under 8 years of age who want to enter a house made by a kit. New this year, there are categories for traditional and non-traditional entries.

Ribbons are given to all winners, and, additionally, the Best of Show winner will receive $100. A special gift basket from Tess’ Kitchen Store will be also awarded to the Best of Show winner and the People’s Choice Award.

Entry forms must be received at the Fairgrounds between now and Friday, November 16 by 4 pm. The actual gingerbread house entry must be delivered to the Fairgrounds on Tuesday, November 20 between the hours of 11 am – 6 pm. The cost is $2 to enter, and all Gingerbread House exhibitors will receive two free passes to the Country Christmas Faire.

Entry forms and a complete list of rules can be picked up at the Fairgrounds office on McCourtney Road, or downloaded from the Fair’s website at www.NevadaCountyFair.com.

The 28^th annual Country Christmas Faire begins Friday, November 23, and runs through Sunday, November 25. The hours are 10 am – 5 pm on Friday and Saturday; and 10 am – 4 pm on Sunday. Admission is $4 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. Parking is $5; however, Faire-goers will receive one free admission for each paid parking pass.

Talented artisans fill the Fairgrounds exhibit buildings with quality hand-made crafts and unique gifts, so you can get all your holiday shopping done in one location. Visitors to the Faire will enjoy strolling live entertainment, festival foods, wagon rides, and a community bon-fire. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will be on hand to greet children and a photographer will be available to capture the special moment with Santa.

Free babysitting will be offered so parents can drop off their children while they enjoy holiday shopping, and errand elves will be available to assist shoppers throughout the event.

The Nevada County Fairgrounds is sponsoring a contest to find the best artwork to illustrate the 2013 Nevada County Fair circus theme – “Under the Big Top.” If you’re a talented artist, and you’d like $250, this is the contest to enter!

The contest, which is open to Nevada County residents only, takes place now through Friday, December 7. If you submit the winning artwork, you will win $250 and a 2013 Nevada County Fair package that includes admission tickets, parking and carnival coupons. Additionally, the winning artwork will be used on various Fair promotional pieces, print ads, buttons, t-shirts, banners, posters, and flyers.

Interested artists may use any medium and can submit up to three entries, which must be on 8-1/2 by 11-inch paper. Entries can be delivered to the Fairgrounds Office at 11228 McCourtney Road or mailed to the Fair Office at PO Box 2687, Grass Valley, CA 95945. Nevada County Fair Costume Contests & Dancing

Join us for a ghoulishly good time at the Graveyard Ghoul-a at the Nevada County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 27, from 8 pm to midnight. As part of the fun, there will be numerous costume contests, including one for the most original costume, one for the scariest/goriest costume, one for the best costumed couple, and one for the most humorous costume. Contestants will have a chance to win cash, as well as carnival tickets and tickets to the annual Nevada County Fair and the Draft Horse Classic.

The event will feature dancing, and DJs Bobby ‘G’ and Tonni ‘T’ playing dance hits and crowd-favorites that will keep the crowd moving all night! They’ll also be taking requests at the event, so be prepared to dance to your favorite song!

A bar will be available for beer and booooze; hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, and sweets will be available; and fantastic door prizes will be given away.

Tickets to the Graveyard Ghoul-a are $10 if purchased in advance, and $15 at the door. Parking is free. For your convenience, camping will be available for only $10. Must be 21 years or older to attend.

Fun at the Fairgrounds: 1 – 4 pm – Graveyard Ghoul-a: 8 pm – midnight

Join in the fall festivities and Halloween fun at the Nevada County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 27. This year, there are two events to choose from – “Halloween Fun at the Fairgrounds” during the day for children and families, and a “Graveyard Ghoul-a” at night for those 21 years and older. Rain or shine, in costume or in street clothes, don’t miss out on the fun!

Halloween Fun at the Fairgrounds: A Treat for the Kids

Bring your family and friends for some Halloween Fun at the Fairgrounds, from 1- 4 pm on Saturday, October 27. Hot dogs will be served, and there will be treats for the kids, a cupcake walk, and lots of games. Plus, you don’t want to miss the costume contests and a chance to win some great prizes!

The cost for the Halloween event at the Fairgrounds is only $5 per person and includes food, treats, games, and entertainment! Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event. This family-friendly Halloween event is hosted by the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation.

Graveyard Ghoul-a: A Treat for Adults

Adults have fun at a costume contest at last year’s Graveyard Ghoul-a at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. This year’s event is October 27 from 8 pm – midnight.

In the evening, for those over 21 years of age, we’ve got some ghoulish goings-on at the Graveyard Ghoul-a, which takes place on Saturday, October 27, from 8 pm to midnight. Join us for a ghoulishly good time, including dancing, a rockin’ DJ, beer and booooze, food and a costume contest. And you don’t want to miss out on some great door prizes. Tickets to the Graveyard Ghoul-a are $10 if purchased in advance, and $15 at the door. Parking is free, and, for your convenience, camping will be available at a special rate of $10.

Nevada County Fair Announces 26th Annual Draft Horse Classic Awards

Awards for the 26^th annual Draft Horse Classic, held September 20 – 23 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, have been announced. Gary Nebergall of Arthur, Illinois judged the Draft Horse competitions and halter show. Dwight Gilbert from Nevada was the judge of the pulling contest; and Craig Trnka from New Mexico was the horseshoe competition judge.

Draft horse exhibitors from California, British Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Washington competed for more than $35,000 in premium awards. The competitions took place during six performances over the four-day event.

The winner of the Six-Up Ultimate Hitch Championship was Kirk Messenger of the Mark Messenger Memorial Hitch, from Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Dakota Messenger, also of Mark Messenger Memorial Hitch, and Katie Cook of Young Living Percherons from Mona, Utah, were recognized as the outstanding lady drivers, both accumulating high points to win the Susan Parnell High Point Perpetual Award.

The Teamster of the Year Award was presented to Steve Smith, an honor bestowed upon him by the voting of his fellow teamsters. Smith is from Quail Creek Percherons in Carmichael, California. The Draft Horse & Mule Association presented their special Teamster Award to Kirk Messenger of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Ciera Barry of Shady Oaks Ranch in Millville, California, won the Youth of the Show award.

The Overall Supreme Champion horse, Hugh; the Grand Champion Stallion, Ogdensburg HC Variety; and the Grand Champion Mare, Mission Bell Abigail; are all owned by Castagnasso Clydesdales and shown by Tony Knecht of Sonoma, California.

The winner in the 2012 Edward Martin Perpetual Horseshoeing Competition was J D Downs of Colorado.

At the second annual Classic BBQ Cook-Off, the Grand Champion was Richard Holguin, cooking for Cecil’s Smokin’ BBQ of San Jose; and the Reserve Grand Champion prize went to Mary Odor, cooking for Mad Mo’s BBQ of Meridian. The People’s Choice Champion was Bad S BBQ of Sunnyvale, with Ryan Pang cooking.

At the Harvest Fair, the People’s Choice award for the Scarecrows went to Nancy Brown, and the Best of Division in the Scarecrows went to Rivera Swartzendruber.

Cook Off at the Nevada County Fair

In between Draft Horse performances at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, September 20 – 23, take time to visit two tasty events happening on the grounds during the weekend – “Sausage, Brats and Beer” and a “Classic Barbecue Cook-Off.”
On Saturday, September 22, there’s a “Sausage, Brats and Beer” showdown, where six top chefs are paired with a sausage manufacturer to create incredible sausage dishes, and you get to sample the results. The challenge begins at 1 pm, with food sampling from 2 – 5 pm.

On Sunday, September 23, from 1:30 – 4 pm, watch as barbecue experts show off their cooking skills at the “Classic Barbecue Cook-Off.” Once they’re done cooking, you get to taste the treats – ribs, chicken, pulled pork tacos, sandwiches, brisket and a variety of delicious barbecue.

Tasting tickets will be sold at both events, and beer and beverages will be available. Additionally, live entertainment will be provided on Sunday by The Dyin’ Breed Band.

In addition to these two tasty events, the Harvest Fair is bustling with activities during the weekend, including live entertainment, Art at the Classic, Treat Street goodies, a clogging jamboree, a Western Trade Show, and visits to the barns.

Enter Your Exhibits in the Harvest Fair at the Draft Horse Classic

It’s free and all exhibitors will receive free tickets to a Draft Horse Classic performance

Entry forms are now being accepted for entries in the Harvest Fair, which takes place during the Draft Horse Classic, September 20 – 23, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The deadline to turn in entry forms to enter exhibits is 5 pm on Friday, September 14. It’s free to enter, and all exhibitors will receive complimentary tickets to the Friday evening performance of the Draft Horse Classic.

Entry forms are now being accepted at the Fair Office and on-line at www.NevadaCountyFair.com. There are more than 100 different categories to choose from, including fruits and vegetables, cobblers, harvest pies, scarecrows, a garden photo contest, jams, honey, cut flowers, produce characters, and birdhouses. There’s even a “Nature’s Oddities” category for any garden produce that shows an odd shape, color or other quality that makes it an oddity. So many fun categories to choose from!

There’s a division for youth and teens, which includes categories like apple face dolls, decoupage, Halloween masks, painted pumpkins, wreaths, table settings, and ceramics. Plus, there’s a Special People’s division for those interested in showing of their talents at the Harvest Fair.

Exhibitors must either submit paper entry forms at the Fair office or enter online at www.NevadaCountyFair.com between now and Friday, September 14. It’s free and it’s simple!
