American Fire Video

httpv://youtu.be/YhuL9QWkfX8

The American River Fire continues to burn. Heavy smoke continues in the recent areas that I traveled, Nevada City, Grass Valley, Auburn and Roseville. As of this morning, 14,822 acres have been consumed by fire.

The fire is approximately 10 air miles northeast of Foresthill, CA, in steep, rugged terrain. While the fire is predominantly burning on the Tahoe National Forest within the North Fork of the Middle Fork American River drainage, there is a potential, given changes in weather or fire behavior, for the fire to threaten areas near Foresthill.

Active fire behavior continues on the eastern and southern flanks of the fire. Overnight, crews continued to build hand and dozer line to contain the active fire while evaluating future containment options. Firefighters will mop up and patrol containment line along Deadwood Road and Foresthill Divide Road south to the dozer line. Indirect line construction and mop up will continue down Deadwood Ridge. On the east side near Antoine, Manila and Screwauger Canyons, direct and indirect line construction will continue, with support of retardant drops.

Active fire behavior and roll out of burning material continue to be of concern, and will be closely monitored. Strong, erratic outflow winds and lightning may occur today, as the National Weather Service’s Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Active fire behavior in very steep, inaccessible terrain makes preparation of contingency lines critical. Indirect attack is the safest way to manage fire in areas of steep and difficult terrain.

Visit to Olive Vitality, Grass Valley, CA

Last Sunday Judy, my daughter Teresa and I walked the streets of Grass Valley like tourist coming up from the Bay Area.  Having not walked down Mill Street for a while, I was surprised at the many new stores that have opened and of course the many that have closed.

One great new store is the “Olive Vitality” which opened last March. Claiming the freshest olive oils and vinegars on tap, which looking at the inside of the store, I believe it. I counted over 21 different flavors of balsamic vinegar!

You name the flavor of balsamic vinegar and they seem to have it. For example, flavors of strawberry black cherry, dark chocolate, cinnamon pear, espresso and the list goes on for 21 flavors. It seems like all of their balsamic vinegar is imported from Modena, Italy

Besides selling regular olive oil, they like to infuse flavored into olive oil, creating a series of mouthwatering oils to be used for just about every occasion. A few examples, organic basil olive oil, blood orange fused olive oil, organic butter olive oil, and again the list goes on.

The store is well laid out and the owners Matthew & Jeanette Angell are gracious and eager to give you samples of their many exotic products.  Be sure and visit them when you are in town at 126 Mill Street, Grass Valley, CA.

For more information, you can go to their website Olive Vitality

Scramento Home Winemakers June Jubilee Roaring Sucess

Judging wine at the Sacramento Home Winemakers June Jubilee
Judging wine at the Sacramento Home Winemakers June Jubilee

The Sacramento Home Winemakers June Jubilee was a roaring success with 121 wines judged and over 100 members and their families attending.  They had 13 cellar rats (they are the ones that pour the wine for the judges) a couple of data gurus and twelve judges.

All this was held in Judy Pinegar’s barn in Loomis, CA.  With the weather at 100 degrees, thanks has to be given to BBQ chefs Joe McGilivray and Manual for their great barbeque skills. After the judges swirling, sniffing and tasting, 4+ hours and 24 flights later, the gold wines emerged and were lined up for the Best of Division rounds that included 14 reds.

When the best of show was completed, and the competition was stiff, the judges remarked that Sacrmento Home Winemakers  were some of the best that they have judges. Wines judged included lively whites, beautiful roses, unusual red blends, outstanding petite sirahs, creative fruits and desserts; a flight of 8 well-crafted tempranillos and fruit intense blackberry wines.

Chief Judge Mike Touchette, assisted by Jubilee Coordinator Judy Pinegar and Assistant Coordinator Shannon Shackelford, announced the winners.

The Center for the Arts Presents Kansas

httpv://youtu.be/YRCh8yh5Oys

The Center for the Arts presents Kansas with Lorraine Gervais (Women of Rock) unplugged opening, Thursday April 12 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 255 S. Auburn Street, Grass Valley, CA.

Originally formed in Topeka, Kansas during 1973, the group became one of the decade’s most popular rock bands, on the strength of such all-time classic albums as 1976’s four-times platinum ‘Leftoverture’ and 1977’s five-times platinum ‘Point of Know Return’ – which spawned the aforementioned mega hit singles. Despite a few line- up changes throughout the years, Kansas remains immensely popular to this day, and continues to put on amazing shows. Case in point, ‘There’s Know Place Like Home.’ Filmed on February 7, 2009 in their home state (at Washburn University’s White Concert Hall), the concert was certainly not your average affair. For this show, the group was united with former members Kerry Livgren (guitar/keyboards) and Steve Morse (guitar), as well as the 50-piece Washburn University Orchestra.

A Tour of Granite Quarries – Griffith Quarry, Penryn, CA and Rocklin, CA

By Judy Pinegar

John and I wanted some exercise so we went to Griffith Quarry Park and Museum in Penryn, CA.  This site is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the California Landmark Program. The surrounding 23-acre park contains ruins of the first polishing mill built in California and some of the quarry holes from which the unique Penryn granite was taken. It is a wooded area with trails both close to and wider around two large former quarries. The walk starts at the parking lot, where the museum is the same building that used to house the Quarry Office, and the parking lot itself used to be the main Yard and polishing buildings.

Here is a picture of what it looked like circa 1881.

As we walked John took pictures of several areas of interest in the park.

The Penryn stone is dark gray biotite granite, uniform in color, and there was also “black granite,” a very dark granite one mile east of Penryn.  This stone is used mainly for cemetery monuments and buildings.

Then we went to the Museum, and learned more about the quarry, established as Penryn Granite Works, by Welsh immigrant Griffith Griffith in 1864. Mr. Griffith formerly worked in the famous slate quarries in Penrhyn, Wales. He quarried granite at Folsom, but in 1864 he came to Penryn, which he named after his Welsh home. Here he remained, and he and his descendants quarried granite from that time until about 1906. The museum contains some of the original office furniture of the Penryn Granite Works and information on the Griffith family, the granite industry, and the history of the Penryn-Loomis Basin area. While there, talking to the volunteer we heard about the Rocklin History Museum, which had some old mining tools in the basement.

Since that is just a few miles down Taylor Road, we went there next, where they display Rocklin’s history of “Rock, Rails and Ranches”. They have a timeline of the small settlement of the 1850’s to the thriving community of today. There also was a lot of information about when the Central Pacific Rocklin Roundhouse provided engines to power the Transcontinental Railroad over the high Sierra. When they grew out of space in Rocklin, they moved the whole roundhouse to Roseville along with some of the houses!

Rocklin was the “Granite Capitol of the West” over 40 quarries were in operation at one time. The Rocklin granite quarries were first opened about 1861. The Big Gun granite quarry is located behind the Rocklin City Hall building, and John and I walked across the street to see it. Rocklin stone is biotite granite, lighter in color than the Penryn granite.

California Sales and Other News

sold

Well, the latest news from the California Association of REALTORS® (C.A.R.) states that sales in December of 2008 increased 84.9 percent compared with the same period last year. On the other hand, median home prices fell 41.5 percent during the same period. The median price in December was $281,100 compared to $480,820 in December 2007 according to C.A.R. By the way, in my previous blog I stated that DataQuick’s figures showed a 48 percent increase in sales from a year ago. Maybe we should average the two figures! I think what C.A.R. is comparing is the month of December 2007 to the month of December 2008. You have to be careful to about news stories, no?

“Sales have continued to be strong, exceeding 500,000 units for the fourth consecutive month and year-to-date sales are nearly 27percent above last year” said C.A.R. President James Liptak. (More percentages)

Several things have helped to bring buyers into the market. Declining interest rates have dropped along with declining home prices. In addition home building has dropped to a 17 year low which, while it hurts the economy, it also slows the flow of new homes into the market. First time home buyers are now able to afford a home. Investors are flooding into the market place, knowing that this is a buying opportunity of a lifetime.

By the way, I ranted in an earlier blog about banks being bailed out and how they used the money to help their own bottom line instead of you and I. Here’s an example of what we helped bail out with our money. Bank of America bought Merrill Lynch because it seemed to the bank to be a way to expand their holdings. John Thain was CEO of Merrill Lynch at that time and was allowed to continue as a one of Bank of America’s managers He has since been fired when B of A found out that he had given billions (not millions) of dollars in bonuses to Merrill Lynch employees in his last days as CEO there, while his company was going under and had to be rescued.

You know of course, that the government has given Bank of America 20 billion dollars in rescue monies and another 118 billion is sitting there, if they need it. They need the money because of their acquisitions of FleetBoston Financial, Countrywide and Merrill Lynch. So continuing with the saga of John Thain, John then spent 1.2 million dollars remodeling his office, including $1,450 for a parchment wastebasket. So this is where part of our rescue monies have gone, to pay for a $1,450 parchment waste basket! Read the full story of John Thain at MSNBC
