Country Christmas Faire Coloring Contest

The Nevada County Fairgrounds is offering a coloring contest for children and adults as part of the annual Country Christmas Faire, November 23 – 25, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Coloring sheets are available at the Fairgrounds office on McCourtney Road or they can be downloaded at NevadaCountyFair.com.

There are two drawings to choose from, and it’s free to enter the coloring contest. Simply choose your favorite drawing, fill out the entry form, complete the drawing, and return it to the Nevada County Fairgrounds – either by mail or in person – before November 16.  The coloring contest is limited to one entry per person.

The coloring contest is divided into seven categories: five years old and under, 6 – 8 years, 9 – 12 years, 13 – 17 years, 18 – 64 years, 65 and over, and special needs. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded.  Winners will receive carnival ride coupons for the 2019 Nevada County Fair.   

All entries will be on display in Ponderosa Hall with the gingerbread houses during the Country Christmas Faire.  Winners will be announced with ribbons on opening day of the Country Christmas Faire.

The Country Christmas Faire features four exhibit buildings filled with handcrafted gifts and unique crafts. Visitors to the Faire also enjoy strolling musical entertainment, festival foods, wagon rides, a visit with Santa Claus, and a community bonfire. The Country Christmas Faire begins Friday, November 23, and runs through Sunday, November 25.  The hours are 10 am – 5 pm on Friday and Saturday; and 10 am – 4 pm on Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, and free to children 12 and under. Parking is free.  On Sunday only, bring a can of food and receive $1 off admission. All food will be collected by the Interfaith Food Ministry and distributed in December to those in need.

    Would You Buy A Haunted House?

    Home buyers may be so anxious to find a home that they aren’t even spooked if it’s rumored to be haunted. A new survey says one in three consumers say they’re willing to take a chance on a haunted home, but there needs to be something to sweeten the deal for them, according to realtor.com®’s annual Haunted Real Estate Report, based on responses from more than 1,000 Americans. However, 18 percent said a home that is haunted wouldn’t affect their purchase decision at all.

    “In a competitive market, it’s harder for prospective buyers to be extremely selective,” says Danielle Hale, realtor.com®’s chief economist. “If a house is commensurately priced, or has desirable features, the fact that it may be haunted seems to matter less. This report shows that, for those looking for a good deal, a lower price, better neighborhood, or larger kitchen can balance out a few spooky happenings.”

    To Buy or Not?

    Realtor.com® researchers asked respondents to decide between purchasing a haunted or non-haunted home. Responses fell within these three categories:

    • I’ll buy, but sweeten the deal: A third of respondents said they needed an incentive to buy a haunted house. They could be enticed by a lower sales price, larger kitchen, or better neighborhood.
    • I’ll buy, nothing else required: Eighteen percent of respondents said they’d buy a home believed to be haunted without any additional enticements. Nearly a quarter of consumers between the ages of 35 to 54 said they aren’t spooked by a haunted home.
    • No way am I buying: Forty-nine percent said there is no price low enough, no kitchen large enough to make them want to buy a haunted house. Older generations appear to be the most reluctant to move into a haunted house, according to the survey. Sixty-one percent of consumers over the age of 55 said they would never buy a haunted house compared to 41 percent of millennials or Gen Xers who said they wouldn’t.

    Haunted homes are not uncommon in real estate. Nearly two in five consumers surveyed say they have lived in a haunted—or possibly haunted—house. Forty-four percent of respondents say they either suspected it or were fully aware it was haunted before moving in. What makes a home haunted house? Respondents said hearing strange noises (54%), odd feelings in certain rooms (45%), and erratic pet behavior (34%).

        Nevada County Fair Tickets Now on Sale 2018

        Fair Office to extend its hours and open the weekend before the Fair for discounted tickets! 

        Tickets for the Nevada County Fair are on sale now. Purchase your admission, carnival tickets, and arena event tickets before the Fair begins and save time and money!  The Fair Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, and Guest Services will be open specifically for ticket sales on Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5 from 10 am to 5 pm on both days. You can also save time by purchasing your Fair tickets online at NevadaCountyFair.com.

        Buy your admission tickets before August 7 at 5 pm and get an admission ticket for $7.  You can also take advantage of other presale offers, including a five-day Fair pass with unlimited entry for $30, an event parking pass for $25, or a carnival ride bracelet (good for unlimited rides on any one day) for $25.  

        Now is the time to also purchase your arena event tickets – including tickets to this year’s all new Truck and Tractor Pulls! Tickets are on sale now for the Flying U Extreme Rodeo on Wednesday, Truck and Tractor Pulls on Thursday night, Monster Trucks and Tough Trucks on Friday and Saturday night, and the Destruction Derby on Sunday night.

        There are several ways to get your Fair tickets early. Purchase them online at NevadaCountyFair.com, stop by the Fair Office on McCourtney Road, or call the Fair Office at (530) 273-6217 by August 7 at 5 pm.

        The Fair Office at Gate 1 is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, and Guest Services at Gate 1 will also be open on Saturday, August 4, and Sunday, August 5, from 10 am to 5 pm on both days.

        After August 7, ticket prices for the Fair are $9 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for children
        6-12, and free to children under the age of 5.  There are also new special promotions on each day of the Fair:

        • Wednesday: Scholar Students Day

        Free admission for Nevada County Honor Roll students until 5 pm

        (by invitation only from the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools)

         

        • Thursday: Community Day
          Free coupon book with coupons for Treat Street, souvenirs and the Draft Horse Classic
          for the first 10,000 customers.

        Free admission for disabled persons until 5 pm

         

        • Friday: Family Friday

        Free parking in Fair lots until noon

          Free Vision/Hearing Screening Services at Nevada County Fairgrounds

          Local Lions Club Will Provide Free Vision/Hearing  Screenings July 30, 2018

          As part of Community Involvement Day, the Foothill Lions Club will provide free glaucoma and vision screening services as well as free hearing testing to adults and children at the Nevada County Fair’s Community Involvement Day on Monday, July 30, from 1 – 6 pm at Gate 1 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

          For the vision screenings, the Lions will utilize the Northern California Lions Sight Associations Vision Screening Unit, a fully-equipped motorhome that is designed to offer no-cost glaucoma and visual screening services to those who otherwise might not be able to afford it. The services are available for adults and children. The Lions Club will be staffing the unit, and local optometrists –Dr. Jerry Chan, OD and Dr. Tiffany Chan, OD – will volunteer their services for the day.

          New this year, Foothill Lions will also be offering free hearing tests for adults and children. The testing will be provided by Sol Barros, an audiologist specialist from Audiology Associates Hearing Center who will donate her time for this event. All screenings at this event are free, as the Foothill Lions Club covers all costs.

          The free hearing and vision screening is provided as part of Community Involvement Day, a day to donate items to nonprofit organizations – the Food Bank of Nevada County, Foothill Lions, Nevada County 2-1-1, NEO Youth Center, Story Club, Community Beyond Violence, Cinderella Project, The Karing Closet, Gold Country YMCA, Nevada County Pets in Need, Nevada County Diaper Project, and The White Barn Project – in exchange for coupons for buy one, get one adult admission tickets to the Fair.  Or, donate blood through BloodSource on that day and receive a free admission ticket to the Fair.  The organizations will be at the Fairgrounds Gate 1 parking lot and Main Street Center on Monday, July 30, from 1 – 6 pm.

            Myra Davies To Be Inducted Into Nevada County Fair’s Hall Of Fame

            The Nevada County Fair’s Board of Directors has announced that Myra Davies will be inducted into the Nevada County Fair’s Hall of Fame. The Board recognized Davies for her longtime service and dedication to the Nevada County Fair and for her commitment to local agriculture.

            Davies is a fifth-generation local rancher who lives on her family’s historic Dipper Valley Ranch in Nevada City.  Since retiring from her county job, Davies can often be found on her ranch checking her cows and delivering firewood. “The legacy of the history, the land and the soil are in my soul and part of who I am,” she says. “To me, ranching and farming is not a job, it is a chosen way of life.”

            That love of ranching and farming can be seen in her commitment to the Nevada County Fair and her involvement in community activities dedicated to supporting agriculture and youth in agriculture.  During the Fair, Davies, who has been attending the Fair since she was a child, can be found at the Cattlewomen’s Marian Ghidotti Red Barn and the Nevada County Farm Bureau booths where she works diligently to carry on agricultural traditions.

            In addition to her work at the Fair, Davies has served in various capacities in the Kentucky Flat 4-H Club, including Community Club Officer/President and a Horse and Hiking leader. She currently serves as a Nevada County Farm Bureau Director, President of the Placer Nevada Cattlewomen’s (PNCW) Association, and Chair of the PNCW Beef Ambassador Program. She is actively involved in Ag in the Classroom, a member of California Cattlewomen, National Cattlewomen, Nevada County Republican Women Federated, and Nevada County Grown.

            “I am deeply honored to be inducted into the Fair’s Hall of Fame,” said Davies. “The Nevada County Fair is a stronghold for our community. There is no other place as beautiful, accommodating, and with such strong community support for youth to showcase their yearlong projects. The Nevada County Fair is a hub, a focal point, to keep these traditions strong and it’s very important that I support organizations that carry on family and agricultural traditions. My life is family, faith, community, clubs, the Dipper Valley Ranch, beef, keeping ag alive through youth, and the Fair. That’s really all I need.”

            Davies will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at opening day ceremony on August 8 and will receive a portrait donated by Shaffers Originals of Grass Valley. The 2018 Nevada County Fair is August 8 – 12. For information, visit NevadaCountyFair.com.

              Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation’s Speaker Series Features Anita Oberbauer

              Anita Oberbauer, Professor and Chair of the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis, spent Wednesday evening with local students from Bear River and Nevada Union high schools as a guest speaker of the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation’s Speaker Series.  The series, now in its second season, brings business education – through access to business leaders and real-life leadership experiences – to local high school students.

              Oberbauer shared stories from her “long and winding road” that led to her career path. Words of advice included to stretch yourself and be daring (but be safe and wear protective armor); always seek balance and goals (don’t be afraid to ask for things, but also be willing to give); and never be afraid to recalculate (a career path isn’t always straight, so recalculate as necessary).  She also shared a quote from Louis Pasteur – “Chance favors the prepared mind; and opportunity favors the bold” – and encouraged students to be bold in their choices.

              Oberbauer joined the UC Davis faculty in 1989, and was appointed as the Chair of the Department of Animal Science in 2009.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of California, Davis, and her Ph.D. in Animal Physiology at Cornell University. She also completed post-doctoral fellowships in Perinatal Biology at Loma Linda University and Biological Chemistry at University of California, Los Angeles. She was honored in 2002 with a prestigious UC Davis Distinguished Teaching Award, as well as the American Society of Animal Science Corbin Award in Companion Animal Biology (2004), the Distinguished Teacher Award for the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science (2006), and the Outstanding Mentor Award from the UC Davis Consortium for Women & Research (2011).  

              The second season of the Speaker Series features six speakers, one each month, and will run through April.  Upcoming speakers include Caroline Beteta, CEO of Visit California; and Julie Baker, Executive Director of Center for the Arts.

              Draft Horse Classic Tickets on Sale Now

              Majestic Draft Horse performances, breath-taking competitions, and seeing a Draft Horse “up-close” are all part of the festivities at the 28th annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair, September 18 – 21, at the beautiful Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. Featuring six performances by the beautiful Draft Horses, this event has become the premier Draft Horse show in the western United States. The Classic spotlights a variety of horses, teams, and performances; featuring everything from farm wagons, carriages, and driving competitions to dancing horses and racing mules.  The stars of the show are the horses, and with more than 120 horses stabled on the grounds, the Classic offers a unique chance to observe them in a multitude of settings.

              Tickets to this event are on-sale now.  Once again, we’re offering discounted pricing on adult admission tickets for evening performances, as well as on morning performances and children’s tickets.  Tickets can be purchased by calling (530-273-6217), faxing (530-273-1146), or visiting the Fair Office on McCourtney Road.               Although there is a charge for the Draft Horse performances in the arena, admission to the Fairgrounds is free so all can enjoy the many activities of the Harvest Fair happening during the four days of the Classic. Visit the grounds to enjoy western music, Harvest Fair agricultural competitions and hundreds of community exhibits, a clogging jamboree, horse shoeing demonstrations, delicious food on Treat Street, and artwork at Art at the Classic. Plus, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to visit the barns and meet the famous Draft Horses up-close.

              On Saturday of the Classic, it’s the Backyard BBQ and Chef’s Challenge Rib Cook-Off, happening from 1 – 3:30 pm.               Destruction Derby at the 2014 Nevada County Fair

              It’s back – the Destruction Derby at the Nevada County Fair!  The popular Derby, held on Sunday of the Nevada County Fair, will be locally produced by five of Nevada County’s Rotary Clubs – The Rotary Club of Nevada City, Rotary Club of Nevada County South, 49er Breakfast Rotary of Nevada City, Penn Valley Rotary, and Rotary Club of Grass Valley.

              This year’s Destruction Derby is sure to be a crowd favorite! Watch as drivers put their cars to the ultimate test and crash, smash, and ram other vehicles while trying to keep their own vehicle running! That’s demolition at its best.

              “The Nevada County Fairgrounds is extremely pleased that the Rotarians, who are leaders in our community, are taking on the production of the Destruction Derby at the Fair,” said Sandy Woods, CEO of the Nevada County Fairgrounds. “This event will be a truly locally produced event, and we are excited to be able to offer this entertainment to our community.”

              The Destruction Derby is held on Sunday, August 10, at 7 pm at the Nevada County Fair. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for kids 12 and under.

              In addition to the Destruction Derby, this year’s Fair has a full line up in the arena, including the Flying U Extreme Rodeo (produced by Cotton Rosser and Flying U Rodeo) on Wednesday and Thursday night, and Tuff Trucks and Monster Trucks (produced by Scott Miller Paving, Inc.) on Friday and Saturday night.

              NEVADA COUNTY FAIR: AUGUST 6 – 10

              Grass Valley – It’s Fair season, and the Nevada County Fair, happening August 6 – 10, has five days of “Simply Fun” planned for Fair-goers of all ages. Held under the shade of the tall pine trees in Grass Valley, the Nevada County Fair is the perfect opportunity to listen to musical entertainment, eat delicious food, enjoy carnival rides and games, visit barns full of animals, and see thousands of community exhibits – all in a community-friendly environment.

              While visiting the Fair, zip line across The Green, check out the sky diver flying into the arena during the rodeo, try your hand at gold panning, walk in a water balloon, see baby chicks hatch in the embryology display, watch the Fair’s Family Feud competition, or listen to Mogollon’s music as they celebrate 20 years of performing at the Nevada County Fair. Or, how about visiting Circus Imagination, where children become instant stars by being selected from the audience, put in costume, and then performing in a spontaneous circus for the crowd.

              Long-time crowd pleasing events will soar into the Fair’s arena Wednesday through Sunday evening. There’s the Flying U Extreme Rodeo happening on Wednesday and Thursday evening; while Friday and Saturday night features Tuff Trucks and Monster Trucks. On Sunday, the ever-popular Destruction Derby returns to the arena. All arena events begin at 7 pm.

              Enjoy ongoing, musical entertainment at one of the outdoor stages. This year features a variety of music – pop rock, country rock, traditional country, Chicago-style blues, jazz, traditional and contemporary bluegrass, rockabilly dance, and rock and roll. Barbershop quartets, hula dancing and dancers, and Nevada County’s Concert Band will also be featured on the various stages.

              For more fun, enter one of the special contests held daily in the Special Events tent. There’s a Cell Phone Photo Scavenger Hunt, an Instagram contest, Field Games, Kids Duct Tape Art Challenge, a Yo-Yo Contest, a Scrapbook Page Layout Contest, “Minute to Win It” fun, a Diaper Derby, a Just Dance Contest, and nightly karaoke.               A visit to the Fair wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Treat Street. It is here that you’ll find an array of delicious foods and drinks – pasties, tacos, corn on the cob, beer, tempura zucchini, baked potatoes, nachos, hamburgers, corn dogs, caramel corn, and more – all while supporting local, non-profit organizations.
