BBQ Cook-off and Bounty of the County Nevada County Fairgrounds

PART OF THE FESTIVITIES AT THE DRAFT HORSE CLASSIC WEEKEND

“Backyard BBQ Cook-Off” on Saturday, September 20;

“Bounty of the County” on Sunday, September 21

In between Draft Horse performances at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, September 18 – 21, take time to visit two tasty events happening on the grounds during the weekend – “Backyard BBQ Cook-Off” and “Bounty of the County.”

On Saturday, September 20, from 1 – 4 pm, taste the delicious samples of food made by BBQ experts. Tasting tickets will be available at the event at 5 for $10. Come taste the treats, enjoy a beverage or two, and sit back and listen to live musical entertainment by local favorite “Cool Heat.”

On Sunday, September 21, Bounty of the County takes place from 1 – 4 pm. Bring your appetite to this fun and delicious event, hosted by Nevada County Grown. Bounty of the County is a pairing of fabulous local chefs with the finest produce and meats of Nevada County Grown farmers and ranchers. This is local, fresh, and delicious food at its best – and a feast for your palate. In addition to great food, there will be music, vendors, demonstrations, and educational booths. Artists’ Studio in the Foothills (ASiF) will also feature an art exhibit and sale. For the children, there will be plenty of activities, including veggie stamping, pasta shell necklaces, recycled paper pots, butterfly plant markers, and a soil discovery station. Tasting tickets will be sold at the event at 3 for $10, and proceeds benefit local agriculture. Additional details can be found at NevadaCountyGrown.org.

In addition to these two tasty events, the Harvest Fair is bustling with activities during the weekend, including musical entertainment on the Pine Tree stage, Art at the Classic, delicious festival food on Treat Street, a clogging jamboree, a Western Trade Show, and visits to the barns.

The Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair runs September 18 – 21 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. There are six performances featuring the magnificent Draft Horses – Thursday and Friday at 6:30 pm, Saturday at 10 am and 6:30 pm, and Sunday at 10 am and 4 pm.

Draft Horse Classic Tickets on Sale Now

Majestic Draft Horse performances, breath-taking competitions, and seeing a Draft Horse “up-close” are all part of the festivities at the 28^th annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair, September 18 – 21, at the beautiful Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. Featuring six performances by the beautiful Draft Horses, this event has become the premier Draft Horse show in the western United States. The Classic spotlights a variety of horses, teams, and performances; featuring everything from farm wagons, carriages, and driving competitions to dancing horses and racing mules. The stars of the show are the horses, and with more than 120 horses stabled on the grounds, the Classic offers a unique chance to observe them in a multitude of settings.

Tickets to this event are on-sale now. Once again, we’re offering discounted pricing on adult admission tickets for evening performances, as well as on morning performances and children’s tickets. Tickets can be purchased by calling (530-273-6217), faxing (530-273-1146), or visiting the Fair Office on McCourtney Road. Tickets can also be purchased on-line at NevadaCountyFair.com. There is a small transaction fee if you order your tickets on-line. Ticket order forms are available at www.NevadaCountyFair.com. Choose from six performances!

Although there is a charge for the Draft Horse performances in the arena, admission to the Fairgrounds is free so all can enjoy the many activities of the Harvest Fair happening during the four days of the Classic. Visit the grounds to enjoy western music, Harvest Fair agricultural competitions and hundreds of community exhibits, a clogging jamboree, horse shoeing demonstrations, delicious food on Treat Street, and artwork at Art at the Classic. Plus, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to visit the barns and meet the famous Draft Horses up-close.

On Saturday of the Classic, it’s the Backyard BBQ and Chef’s Challenge Rib Cook-Off, happening from 1 – 3:30 pm. Whether you want to show off your cooking skills or simply join the fun and taste the treats – we’ve got it all in one place. Tasting tickets and alcoholic beverages will be available to purchase at the event.

On Sunday, September 21, enjoy the Fall-like weather underneath the tall pine trees for Bounty of the County. Nevada County Fair 27th Annual Draft Horse Classic Awards

Awards for the 27th annual Draft Horse Classic, held September 19 – 22 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, have been announced. Gord Ruzicka of Viking, Alberta, Canada, judged the Draft Horse competitions and halter show. Dwight Gilbert from Nevada was the judge of the pulling contest; and Don Davis from Redding was the horseshoe competition judge.

More than 50 Draft Horse exhibitors – traveling from California, British Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming – competed for approximately $40,000 in premium awards. The competitions took place during five performances over the four-day event.

The winner of the Ultimate Hitch competition was Freeman Yoder of Young Living Percherons, from Mona, Utah.

Dakota Messenger of Mark Messenger Memorial Hitch, from Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Katie Cook of Young Living Percherons, were recognized as the outstanding lady drivers, both accumulating high points to win the Susan Parnell High Point Perpetual Award.

The Teamster of the Year Award was presented to David and Patsy Cunningham, an honor bestowed upon them by the voting of their fellow teamsters. The Cunninghams are from Meadowlake Belgians in Carlton, Oregon. The Andy Amsbaugh Teamster Award went to Rick Newborn of Top Hand Ranch, Elverta, California; and Cadee Miller of Young Living Percherons, won the Youth of the Show award.

The Overall Supreme Champion horse, Hugh; and the Grand Champion Stallion, Ogdensburg HC Variety, are owned by Castagnasso Clydesdales and shown by Tony Knecht of Sonoma, California.

The Grand Champion Mare, Jansens Farms Kayla, is owned by Young Living Percherons, and shown by Freeman Yoder.

The winner in the 2013 Edward Martin Perpetual Horseshoeing Competition was Robbie Mederos.

At the third annual Classic BBQ Cook-Off, the Grand Champion was Jeff Lenke, cooking for Ash Kickin’ Smokers of Lincoln; and the Reserve Grand Champion prize went to Brian Choate, cooking for Smokin’ The Bandit BBQ of Plumas Lake. The People’s Choice Champion was Jack Simmons of Big Shot BBQ of Discovery Bay.

At the Harvest Fair, the People’s Choice award for the Scarecrows, as well as the Best of Division in the Scarecrows, went to Nancy Brown of Grass Valley.

Bring your appetite to this fun and delicious event, hosted by Nevada County Grown. Bounty of the County is a pairing of fabulous local chefs with the finest produce and meats of Nevada County Grown farmers and ranchers. This is local, fresh, and delicious food at its best – and a feast for your palette. In addition to great food, there will be music, vendors, demonstrations, and children’s activities.

Tasting tickets – available at 2 tickets for $5 – will be sold at the event, and all proceeds are for the benefit of local agriculture. Additional details can be found at NevadaCountyGrown.org.

Tasting tickets will be available at the event at 5 for $10. Come taste the treats and listen to live music by one of Nevada County’s favorite bands, The Dyin’ Breed.

Enter Your Exhibits in the Harvest Fair at the Draft Horse Classic

It’s free and all exhibitors will receive free tickets to a Draft Horse Classic performance

Entry forms are now being accepted for exhibit entries in the Harvest Fair, which takes place during the Draft Horse Classic, September 19 – 22, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The deadline for Nevada County residents to turn in entry forms to enter exhibits is 4 pm on Friday, September 13. It’s free to enter, and all exhibitors will receive complimentary tickets to the Friday evening performance of the Draft Horse Classic.

Entry forms are now being accepted at the Fair Office and on-line at Nevada County Fair website. There are more than 100 different categories to choose from, including fruits and vegetables, cobblers, harvest pies, scarecrows, a garden photo contest, jams, honey, cut flowers, produce characters, and birdhouses. There’s even a “Harrowingly Huge Harvest Haul” category for those extra big vegetables and fruit; and an Adult Artistic Corner for those interested in showing off arts and crafts. So many fun categories to choose from!

There’s a division for youth and teens, which includes categories like apple face dolls, decoupage, Halloween masks, painted pumpkins, wreaths, table settings, and ceramics. Plus, there’s a Special People’s division for those interested in showing off their talents at the Harvest Fair.

Exhibitors must either submit paper entry forms at the Fair office or enter online at Nevada County Fair website between now and Friday, September 13. It’s free and it’s simple!

Nevada County Fairgrounds Draft Horse Classic to be Featured on RFD TV

Segment to air on Friday, June 7, and Saturday, June 8

This weekend, Rural Heritage will feature a ½ hour program on the annual Draft Horse Classic held at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The segment on the Draft Horse Classic will air on Friday, June 7, at 11 am, and again on Saturday, June 8, at noon, Pacific Time, on RFD TV.

The segment will feature the Draft Horse Classic, which has become the premier Draft Horse Show in the Western United States. The footage covers the 2012 Classic, including the various competitions, interviews with participants, Harvest Fair activities, and lots of close up shots of the stars of the show – the beautiful Draft Horses.

This year’s Draft Horse Classic is September 19 – 22 at the tree-covered Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased by calling the Fairgrounds Office at (530) 273-6217 or visiting the Fairgrounds’ website at www.NevadaCountyFair.com

Nevada County Fair Announces 26th Annual Draft Horse Classic Awards

Awards for the 26^th annual Draft Horse Classic, held September 20 – 23 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, have been announced. Gary Nebergall of Arthur, Illinois judged the Draft Horse competitions and halter show. Dwight Gilbert from Nevada was the judge of the pulling contest; and Craig Trnka from New Mexico was the horseshoe competition judge.

Draft horse exhibitors from California, British Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Washington competed for more than $35,000 in premium awards. The competitions took place during six performances over the four-day event.

The winner of the Six-Up Ultimate Hitch Championship was Kirk Messenger of the Mark Messenger Memorial Hitch, from Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The Draft Horse & Mule Association presented their special Teamster Award to Kirk Messenger of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Ciera Barry of Shady Oaks Ranch in Millville, California, won the Youth of the Show award.

The Overall Supreme Champion horse, Hugh; the Grand Champion Stallion, Ogdensburg HC Variety; and the Grand Champion Mare, Mission Bell Abigail; are all owned by Castagnasso Clydesdales and shown by Tony Knecht of Sonoma, California.

The People’s Choice Champion was Bad S BBQ of Sunnyvale, with Ryan Pang cooking.

At the Harvest Fair, the People’s Choice award for the Scarecrows went to Nancy Brown, and the Best of Division in the Scarecrows went to Rivera Swartzendruber.

In between Draft Horse performances at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, September 20 – 23, take time to visit two tasty events happening on the grounds during the weekend – “Sausage, Brats and Beer” and a “Classic Barbecue Cook-Off.”
On Saturday, September 22, there’s a “Sausage, Brats and Beer” showdown, where six top chefs are paired with a sausage manufacturer to create incredible sausage dishes, and you get to sample the results. The challenge begins at 1 pm, with food sampling from 2 – 5 pm.

On Sunday, September 23, from 1:30 – 4 pm, watch as barbecue experts show off their cooking skills at the “Classic Barbecue Cook-Off.” Once they’re done cooking, you get to taste the treats – ribs, chicken, pulled pork tacos, sandwiches, brisket and a variety of delicious barbecue.

Tickets on sale now for the September 20 – 23 event

Majestic Draft Horse performances, breath-taking competitions, and seeing a Draft Horse “up close” are all part of the festivities at the 26^th annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair, September 20 – 23, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley.

The Draft Horse Classic has grown to become the premier Draft Horse show in the western United States, and features six majestic performances. Whether it’s the Draft Horses working farm equipment, pulling carriages, or working side by-side on a hitch – these amazing animals compete with elegance and power and always entertain.

Tickets to this event are on sale now, and we’re offering discounted pricing on morning performances and children’s tickets. Draft Horse Classic evening and late afternoon performance tickets are $21 for reserved seating and $18 for general admission. For morning performances, tickets are $15 for reserved seating and $12 for general admission. For children (ages 12 and under), any performance ticket is $13 for reserved seating and $10 for general admission. Tickets may be ordered online at www.NevadaCountyFair.com, by FAX, mail, phone or walk-in. There is a small transaction fee if you order your tickets on-line. For all tickets purchased after September 19, there is an additional $3 charge per ticket.

While at the Fairgrounds, take time to visit the Harvest Fair – which is open during the Classic. Activities include live musical entertainment, a clogging jamboree, Treat Street goodies, Art at the Classic, community exhibits, and lots of opportunities to meet and see the Draft Horses.

Once again, guided barn tours will be available on Friday and Saturday of the Classic. For these tours, reservations are required and are limited in space.

On Sunday, back by popular demand, is the 2^nd Annual Classic BBQ Cook-Off from
1:30 – 4 pm. Whether you want to watch BBQ experts how off their cooking skills or simply join the fun and taste the treats – the Rib Cook-Off is the place to be. Tasting tickets will be available at the event. Try ribs, chicken, pulled pork tacos, sandwiches, brisket, and a variety of delicious barbecue.
