shares life-experiences and successes with local youth

“Be passionate about what you are doing, put in the extra work, and be consistent.” This is the message of success that John Paye, a former NFL player for the 49ers and Super Bowl champion, shared with local youth on Thursday evening.

Paye addressed FFA and 4H students from Bear River, Nevada Union and Placer high schools, as part of the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation’s Speaker Series, which brings business education – through access to business leaders, life experiences, and leadership tips – to high school students. Paye served as the fifth speaker in the series.

During high school, Paye was voted USA Today’s High School Football Player of the Year. He found a home at Stanford, and was a four-year starter for the Cardinals. He was named All-Pac Ten and All-American while also playing as a starter on Stanford’s basketball team for three years. After his college career, Paye was acquired by the San Francisco 49ers, where he played for three seasons serving as backup to Joe Montana from 1987-1988.  Paye was part of the 49ers offense during their 1988 Championship Season, ultimately going on to win Super Bowl XIX.

Paye shared with students his experience in sports, including playing baseball with Barry Bonds, basketball with Michael Jordan, and football with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. He also shared his childhood memories of the Nevada County Fair, which he continues to visit each year.

Beyond the field for the past 15 years, Paye has worked throughout the west coast educating youth on the importance self-empowerment, saying no to drugs and alcohol, and staying in school.   He reminded the students the importance of staying focused. “Stay on task and don’t get distracted.  Staying focus will help you succeed.”

The Fairgrounds Foundation’s speaker series continues through May.  Students have an opportunity to hear about the speaker’s career path, how they achieved their goals, insight regarding their area of expertise, and an opportunity for questions. The final speaker in this series will be Tom Browning, retired Fire Battalion Chief and current Fairgrounds Board member. The series is sponsored by Sandy Ballou of California Outdoor Properties.

Former NFL Player Arthur J. Marshall Jr. Sentenced for Mortgage Fraud

Former Georgia and NFL player Arthur James Marshall Jr. was sentenced to 69 months in prison for bank fraud related to an elaborate mortgage fraud scheme and was also ordered to pay more than $3.6 million restitution to his victims.

Former NFL wide receiver Arthur J. Marshall Jr. was sentenced to 69 months in prison for bank fraud related to an elaborate mortgage fraud scheme.

According to Moe Bedard of LoanSafe.org, Marshall, of Martinez, Florida, was indicted in June 2009 on 22 counts related to falsifying mortgage applications, real estate contracts and other paperwork that he fraudulently presented to lenders to obtain home loans. The banks were left with millions in bad loans as Marshall’s criminal enterprise crumbled during the housing crash.

Marshall plead guilty on October 2, apologized in court to his victims and promised to make things right in the future. As part of his plea agreement, Marshall has agreed to repay $3.6 million in restitution according to the Victoria Advocate.

“I didn’t intend for them to get hurt, but they did and that’s my fault. I will do everything in my power to make this right. And I will,” he said.

Marshall played five years in the NFL from 1991 to 1996 as a wide receiver with the Denver Broncos and New York Giants. He played at the University of Georgia from 1988 to 1991. He had 87 receptions, 1,267 yards and four touchdowns in his career.

The evidence presented at sentencing revealed that Marshall falsified sales contracts, personal finance records and other documents as part of his mortgage fraud scheme. The victims of Marshall’s scheme included banks, a family who never got a property title from Marshall after paying him $100,000 for a home, and members of the American Legion.

It also says an unnamed couple paid Marshall $100,000 in 2008 to build them a house. Prosecutors say Marshall did little construction work on the home and refused to transfer the title for the property to the buyers

This article is not about Nevada County real estate or Nevada County. I just felt I had to write about Michael Vick going back into football and the NFL. Michael Vick, former quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons and once the highest paid player in football, was convicted in August 2007 of conspiracy and running a dog fighting operation.

He did not just bank roll the operation; he was part of it, hanging dogs, electrocuting and drowning them. He served 23 months in prison and house arrest. He was banned indefinitely from the NFL, well, that is until he got off house arrest in June of this year. On June 20th, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick’s suspension, allowing him to sign with a team.
