Join the Gold Country Woodturners each day at the Nevada County Fair for hands-on demonstrations on woodturning and using a lathe.
Each day, from noon – 8 pm, under the tent outside the Northern Mines Building, skilled woodturners will provide hands-on woodturning demonstrations to adults and children. Using a lathe and a grinder, these experts will be making tops, tool handles, magic wands, and small wooden boxes for the audience. The group will begin at 9 am on Friday, the Day for People with Disabilities.
“Woodturning isn’t as common as it used to be,” said Don Lawson, a member of the Gold Country Woodturners, “so we enjoy the opportunity to talk about woodturning and to be out in the public to teach the skills required of this trade. Of course, we encourage participation from our audiences.”
This is the group’s second year at the Nevada County Fair. The Gold Country Woodturners, the Nevada County affiliate of the American Association of Woodturners,
consists of approximately 32 men and women, whose skill levels range from novice to expert. In addition to the annual Fair, they travel to symposiums around the country, and provide various displays at public libraries and demonstrations at the Harvest Festival. They also have several exhibits entered in this year’s Fair.
During your next visit to the Fair, stop by the tent outside the Northern Mines Building – enjoy the demonstrations, try your hand at woodturning, and maybe even pick up a skill or two.
This year’s Nevada County Fair is August 12 – 16. Visit Nevada County Fair for a schedule of events or call the Fair office at 530-273-6217.
